Performing Rights and Licensing

Introduction: What is a Performance Rights Licence?

At The Drama Teaching Emporium, we are passionate about sharing creative drama resources while ensuring that the intellectual property of our writers is protected. A Performance Rights Licence is required in certain circumstances to grant legal permission for using our scripts beyond educational settings.

Our priority is not to make licensing restrictive or costly but to ensure that:

  • Our creative work is respected and accredited appropriately.
  • Our scripts are used in ways that align with our values.
  • Educators, performers, and organisations have a clear and fair licensing process.

When is a Performance Rights Licence Required?

A licence must be obtained if any of the following apply:

  • If tickets are sold, an admission fee is charged, or donations are collected for the performance.
  • If the performance is part of a revenue-generating event such as a fundraiser or festival.
  • If the performance is recorded and distributed, either digitally or physically.
  • If the performance is live-streamed or made available online, whether for free or for a fee.
  • If the performance recording will be available for an extended period online.
  • If substantial changes are made to the script, such as altering the story, dialogue, or themes.
  • If the script is translated into another language.
  • If the script is modified for a commercial or competitive setting.

Note: Adjusting the number of characters to suit the size of your cast does not require special permission.

  • If the script will be sold, republished, or shared beyond the purchasing organisation.
  • If the script is included in commercial teaching materials or public online content.

Our Approach to Licensing Fees & Processing Time

At The Drama Teaching Emporium, our priority is to protect our creative work rather than generate profit from licensing. We aim to be fair and understanding when determining any fees.

  • All licensing inquiries will be processed within 21 days to ensure we have time to review each request properly.
  • Licensing fees, if applicable, will be assessed on a case-by-case basis based on the scale and nature of the performance or adaptation.
  • If you have any questions about licensing, please feel free to contact us at info@thedramaemporium.com.

By submitting a licensing request, you agree to comply with our Performing Rights and Licensing Policy and ensure that proper credit is given to The Drama Teaching Emporium in all uses of our scripts.
